What is a Chocolate Havanese?

Chocolate Havanese are RARE AND BEAUTIFUL
A chocolate Havanese has chocolate/brown pigment instead of black and various coat colors and types like the non chocolate Havanese. Except the chocolate Havanese have NO black on the dog at all, including pigment and coat color. Havanese chocolates make chocolate/brown color instead of black.

A true chocolate Havanese must have chocolate/brown pigmen (also referred to as self-colored liver pigment) on the nose, eye rims, lips and pads of the feet. They will also have chocolate or clear nails or a combination of both. Chocolate Havanese dogs have a lighter colored eye compared to non chocolate Havanese. Their eye color comes in shades of brown, hazel/green and amber. Chocolate Havanese coat colors can vary from very light Café au Lait milk chocolate to a darker bittersweet chocolate and even chocolate silver. Their coat variations, markings and patterns can be the same as a black pigment Havanese, chocolate solids, parti’s, pied’s, chocolate sables, chocolate brindles, chocolate & tan, etc.

The nose color and eye color on a Havanese is the best indicator as to weather the dog is actually a true chocolate or if it has poor pigmentation. If the dog’s eye color is dark, lips and pads of feet are black with a lighter brownish nose and lighter eye rims, then what you have is not a chocolate but a Havanese with poor black pigmentation. On a true chocolate Havanese, in addition to the liver pigment, the eye color will be lighter.

Chocolate refers to the pigment color not only the coat color. Black pigment Havanese coat colors can come in various shades of brown, this does not mean it is a chocolate Havanese. It mean is has brown coloring in its coat. Havana Brown is a coat color than is often mistaken for a chocolate Havanese. Havana Brown is a combination of mahogany/reddish brown, brown and black mixed within the coat giving an appearance of a darker or lighter tobacco brown color. Havana Brown Havanese have black pigment. Havana Brown puppies are usually born with a black coat color, some will have a small amount of white on them, chest and feet area. As the dog matures the black will turn Havana Brown and the white will usually disappear.

Black puppies in a chocolate litter are referred to as Chocolate Factors they carry the gene that keeps chocolates from fading and are essential in maintain the color of Chocolate. The color must be on both sides of the parents .
